A starter guide: Moving 101

Person packing moving boxes

To help ease the transition, we’ve pulled together a few simple but effective tips to keep your move on track (and your sanity intact):

1. Start early & create a plan

Draft a moving timeline that includes booking movers, collecting boxes, giving notice, and updating your address. Breaking down the process into small, manageable steps can make everything feel less chaotic.

2. Declutter before you pack

Moving is the perfect time to let go of what you no longer need. Donate, recycle, or toss items you haven’t used in the past year — your future self will thank you when you’re unpacking.

3. Label everything (seriously)

Label boxes by room and include a short list of contents. This makes unpacking way smoother and helps movers know where to put things.

4. Pack an essentials box

Keep a small box or suitcase with the things you’ll need right away — toiletries, chargers, a change of clothes, basic kitchen items. It’ll save you from digging through boxes your first night.

5. Take photos of difficult setups

Before unplugging your electronics or disassembling furniture, snap a few quick photos. It'll make reassembly much easier in your new place.

6. Change Your Address (Early!)

Notify your utility companies, bank, insurance providers, and anyone else important of your new address. You can even set up mail forwarding with your postal service to catch anything missed.

7. Give Yourself Time to Settle In

Don’t rush to unpack everything in one day. Take it one room at a time and give yourself permission to settle in gradually. Make it feel like home at your own pace.
